If you’re of a certain vintage, you’ll probably have fond recollections of 80s and 90s television when there was an explosion in property programmes. Changing Rooms led the way, with connected shows like Ground Force and DIY SOS, hot on their heels. The premise was a simple one – spend 10 to 15 minutes showing the current state of a home, a garden, a bedroom, a kitchen and then get to work transforming them.

60 Minute Makeover took this to a whole new level of speediness and it wasn’t long before the same principles applied to the way we look, with Gok Wan and “How to Look Good Naked” along with “10 Years Younger”.

You see, everything ages. Humans do, pets do, cars do and so do kitchens.

If you click on any daytime TV channel, you’ll probably stumble across an old episode of “Escape to the Country” and “Top Gear” and once the shock of seeing Clarkson looking young wears off, you’ll probably wince at car interiors and those awful kitchens that were all the rage in the 80s.

The problem for many though, particularly when money is tight, is that a new kitchen costs as much now as a house did in the late 80s. We talk to many who are quoted £30,000 and more who could, if time travel was possible, buy a nice terraced home in Reddish or a parking space in Alderley Edge!
