Kitchen Colour Trends of 2021
Introducing the kitchen colour trends of 2021. We could keep this short – in fact, make the answer one word: GREY.
There we said it.
Grey, an adjective often applied to dull weather and a dull person, is in vogue. You’ll know though that there isn’t just one shade of grey, or even 50, there’s hundreds. If you look on a Pantone colour chart, you’ll see the many variants from a creamy light grey to an ebony dark grey.
In fact, Pantone have named Ultimate Gray as they colour of the year – you can see the release here and even muse at its suggested pairing – a bright daffodil like yellow.
Grey is a wonderful choice for kitchen resprays as its neutral tones make it timeless and classy. Look at Apple and their iPhones, iPads and MacBooks – their biggest colour seller is Space Grey and it’s the only colour they don’t seem to tamper with. Cars too are often favoured in gunmetal grey, a neat compromise between white and black. It’s a popular choice with prestigious German cars like Audis, VWs and BMWs, as well as SUVs like Range Rovers and the like.
We admit we’re too busy to have counted or researched the exact number of variants of grey – but we do know for sure that Farrow and Ball have 24 varieties of grey which you can see here. You can impress visitors who ask what grey you’ve chosen by saying “Elephant’s Breath” or “Mole’s Breath.”
If you have plenty of natural light, you can go to the darker end of the spectrum of grey, which is something one client did in Delph, Saddleworth. That beautiful kitchen (in an equally beautiful area) was expansive with oodles of natural light. They chose a graphite grey which looks stunning. You can see the project here.
If space is more of an issue, or natural light is in shorter supply, a mid or light grey would be perfect.
Our point is that grey may well be the colour of the year as it is timeless and contemporary, but your choice of grey is almost infinite.
